Annie Hall wins the academy award for Best picture. The EAGLES release their album HOTEL CALIFORNIA which is the record of the year. Album of the year is RUMORS by Fleetwood Mac. On television The Blues Brothers make their first appearance on Saturday Night Live. The Carol Burnett Show, the Bob Newhart Show, Police Woman, and The Six Million Dollar Man are popular with viewers. In automotive news: In New Stanton Pennsylvania Volkswagen becomes the first non-American automobile manufacturer to open a factory in the United States. Producing the Rabbit, which is the North American version of the Volkswagen Golf. Operating with a unionized (UAW) workforce. (The facility closed in 1992.) In the news: The first USA Susan B. Anthony dollar coin enters circulation. Cleveland goes bankrupt, the first USA city to default since the great depression. Sports: Cale Yarborough wins the Winston Cup Championship with 10 wins in 30 starts, and "KING" Richard Petty places 6th with no wins. A J Foyt wins the final USAC championship, the CART Championship Auto Racing Teams open wheel racing series is established. Al Unser Sr. wins the INDY 500. MISC: The jack and tools have never been touched! The jack handle is still in its original bag. The spare tire is the original, has never been used, and is mounted in the original location.

VALUE: In October 2008 a similar 1979 Datsun 210 with 57,700 actual miles was offered on eBay. This auto was a one owner and was located in Iowa. There were 18 bidders. On October 20th when the bidding ended at $6601.00 the reserve was not met. Vintage Japanese automobiles are rising fast in collector value. Especially with the rising price of gasoline.
