1958 SCHWINN

JAGUAR MARK II

Original paint "survivor" - Not restored -

At more than 50 years of age, this very rare original is unusual and unique. Jim is a fan of original patina and this is one of his favorite collectors items.

A very lucky find. - In 1993 a guy at the Schwinn shop (where Jim's Grandfather had worked in the 1960s) told him about this bike.

(after an elderly gentleman dropped-in asking if they knew of anyone who might buy it)

Jim called the man and went to look at it that very day.  It was in a basement "heated" Coal room in a big old house in the historic Highland Park area of Lafayette Indiana. - As told to Jim by the elderly gentleman (seller) - Seems he bought it for his son as a Christmas 1958 gift and the boy did ride it some. But eventually he dropped the bike and broke the gear selector chain where it exited the rear hub. Then they just parked it.

The tires on this Schwinn model are authentic reproductions of the original type "Typhoon" brick tread models

Jim took the bike completely apart and serviced, cleaned and polished everything. It is 100% ready to ride.

There were no batteries in the horn tank. Therefore the interior mechanism is in good condition and the horn works perfectly. 99% of the time, there are old batteries in there that have melted-down and corroded these components rendering them useless.

Odd note: The furnace near where the bike was sitting for more than 30 years had been converted to fuel oil and there was a grimy coating of oil and dust on the whole bike. It looked terrible but was preserved by this coating in incredible condition. Jim thoroughly cleaned and serviced it, but otherwise it is in very nice condition.

Very rare Schwinn Approved but Austrian-made three speed is on this bike. This was a substitution for a brief period when the Sturmey-Archer was not available in the fall and early winter of 1958.

The only things on the bike not original are the tires. See the original "Schwinn script" brake caliper.

The bicycle was sold new at the shop where Jim's Grandfather worked.

This is an almost New Old Stock (NOS) bicycle acquired by Jim in 1994. It is absolutely brand new and has the books and paperwork as well.

Not worth much but pretty cool as it was never been ridden! Sold new at Lafayette's Mulhaupt's Schwinn shop where Jim's Grandfather worked.
